Rimowa’s luggage is already beloved by jet-setters for its distinctive grooves and extremely lightweight design. But the German company’s latest innovation, the “Electronic Tag” system, allows users to check their bags remotely through an app, with the pertinent information—bar code and all—displayed on a case-side screen. This lets passengers skip the line at the airport, and eliminates those sticky (and destructible) paper tags. Extensive testing helped the designers address all worst-case scenarios: The glass is 10 times stronger than an iPhone’s screen and can resist extreme temperatures and humidity; the e-ink stays visible even if the battery dies. The tags are available on several of Rimowa’s lines, and participating airlines so far include Lufthansa, EVA, and Swiss, with a North American carrier to be announced soon. rimowa.com
