Opening Shot: A Seasonal Restaurant Brings Tulum to New York

With a tropical atmosphere and wood-fired Mexican cuisine, fashionable Gitano NYC channels the boho vibe of its sister outpost in Riviera Maya.

Opening Shot is a column that peeks inside new hotels, restaurants, bars, and shops with interiors to drool over.

Gitano NYC

Location: New York City

Designers: James Gardner and Andrew Cramer

On offer: A seasonal outpost of the hot spot original in Tulum, with landscape design by Manscapers NY; an Intelligentsia coffee bar; a pop-up boutique from resortwear brand Caló; a meditation pool; and an urban farm collaboration among City-As-School, Battery Urban Farms, and Grow to Learn.

Standout features: Chefs Mads Refslund and Yvan Lemoine, alums of Noma and Union Fare respectively, are behind the modern Mexican menu. Standouts include chorizo lettuce wraps with fennel and sofrito, pork-belly tacos, and wood-fired chicken with Mole Coloradito and heirloom tomatoes served on wood pergola decks festooned with coconut palms sourced from Florida.
