Fifteen years ago, design dealer Carlos Junqueira opened Espasso in New York. The gallery quickly became a destination for collectors looking to buy contemporary and modern Brazilian design, featuring pieces by Oscar Niemeyer, Joaquim Tenreiro, Lina Bo Bardi, and other boldface names. This summer, Junqueira unveiled his latest venture: Espasso Annex, a gallery devoted to rare and vintage Brazilian design objects and furniture. Located just a few blocks from his Manhattan flagship, the by-appointment-only space expands on Espasso’s offering of limited-edition, contemporary, and re-editioned pieces. As part of the Annex’s program, São Paulo gallery Luciana Brito Galeria will mount three exhibitions in the space over the next 12 months. The current presentation includes a Sérgio Rodrigues coffee table, Jorge Zalszupin dining chairs, and a pair of ’60s Jean Gillon wood-and-leather armchairs—signaling that more rare finds are yet to come.
