Turkish Artist Imprisoned
Turkish artist and journalist Zehra Doğan has received a prison sentence of two years and 10 months for making a painting that implicitly criticized the government. The artwork shows a Kurdish region decimated by Turkish forces. “[The judge has] punished the wrong actor: Not the one who destroyed the town, […] not the one who shot the photo, but the one who painted the photo. They made this painting, not me,” Doğan said in a statement.

Copycat Clothes
The Supreme Court has issued a landmark ruling in the Star Athletica vs. Varsity Brands case, which will profoundly affect fashion copyright law. This is the first suit that the Supreme Court has heard regarding the copyright of clothing design, and it delivered a 6-2 decision in favor of protecting a garment’s visual and sculptural elements. “There’s no question that it’s a big shift,” said copyright lawyer Joseph Mueller. “You can expect to see designers relying on copyright law more often to challenge what they perceive to be knockoffs.”

Canadian Construction
Architect Jeanne Gang of Studio Gang is slated to design a building in Canada, her first in the country. “It’s not going to be a typical all-glass tower,” said Brandon Donnelly, the vice president of development for the firm behind the project. “We want to push boundaries in terms of sustainability and building efficiency.”
