Adidas Originals’s gender-fluid, malleable styles have long served as a canvas for experimentation. This fall, Japanese designer Ryo Kashiwazaki, whose footwear label Hender Scheme also looks beyond gender distinctions, brings a handmade approach to three classic Adidas styles: the MicroPacer, NMD, and Superstar. The limited-edition collection is made in Kashiwazaki’s Tokyo atelier. Artisanal elements such as replaceable nail-in soles and natural leather that ages gracefully over time, reflect the designer’s own aesthetic and expertise as a cobbler. In his hands, sneakers are elevated beyond their mass-produced status to be assiduously crafted design objects.
